Some of 200 RAW’s I converted to JPEG’s today…
Holy crap – sorry for that but I love to be honest and that’s the only way I can express what I feel… It was a long time I spent on my computer today. OK the shots were ok what means there were nearly no edits to make before I converted them. But on the other side some other things had to be done (and I could do them while my computer is working – the “View NX 2” converter is very slow I suppose)…
– wash the dishes *sic*
– ironing *sic*
– home health care – my love caught a gastric flu *sic*
– go shopping (empty fridge) *sic*
– drive to the car wash – a little attempt of escape without success *sic*
I realized that it takes a loooong long time to convert photos from RAW to JPEG and I asked myself “does it make any sense to do that (a few weeks ago I read in some forum thatit don’t mean a thing if you edit your RAW or JPEG-files… So I said to myself “Take a file and optimize it in RAW and then go to Photoshop to edit it, then take the same files, convert them as it is and try to do the very best with them only in Photoshop”.
And the result is – you can believe me – I’ll never shoot in JPEG again. After five *sics* now a *YAY* ’cause this day ended good for me at last

Hmm I’ve been shooting in jpg for some time now…I got tired of the big raw files and I couldn’t tell any difference…can you?

I agree with you Maureen. RAW’s need a lot of memory capacity and to edit them takes a long time and at last I can’t see no difference too between RAW’s and JPEG’s… But in case of wrong white balance or faulty exposure (and I make sometimes these mistakes when I don’t spend the time to find the right settings – particularly when I make shoots from the hip) I have the chance to edit them without having any loss in quality. And sometimes it’s worth to spend the time for it I think – and I mean sometimes 😉
By the way I was inspired to shoot in RAW by our common friend Yan. Particularly when the light is bad (at concerts f. eks.) I love to use the RAW mode on my camera to get the best results in editing…

I use Adobe Bridge to adjust in jpg and can do the white balance etc on the jpgs…then I do my editing and save as a tif…if I’m losing anything I can’t tell.
Hmm low light in RAW I need to do some examples and see if I can tell the diff.

… that’s another way to do it. Be sure I’ll try it too (convert my test files to jpg’s then accurately the way you made it)…

Thank you Yan… and I’m very glad about following your advice to shoot in RAW. A great helper to correct my faults while taking photos and find the right white balance for the future. Meanwhile I make less corrections 😉

Hi RW, yes do test the converting from RAW to jps and then take some photos in jpp and use bridge to make any adjustments and see if you can tell a difference…maybe the difference is in the printing…I don’t know.

Nice pictures of gorgeous kitties! I’m sticking to my jpg’s, at least for now-am spending way too much time playing with pictures on the computer as it is, if I begin with PS I’ll never finish a thing! :p

The images I like most are those that don’t need any edits on PS – because of the time you can waste with editing. And I agree with you – there are so many things in life that are more important than to get moldy at the computer…

Raw format is more flexible than JPG. I you have to adjust the WB it is hazardous to correct itin JPG.

Well the images of the tiger and the lion were two of 194 files I made on my vacation that my friend rescued from my SD-card. Maybe you remember the story I told at VOX about the 1200 files that I lost (!?)….
Particularly these two photos were with a blue cast – that much that I was glad to use the RAW-setting on my camera.
The other three ones are JPEG’s. I shot them while my friend tries to find my lost files. I appreciate edits without any loss of quality. That’s why I prefer RAW-files – and a 1 terabyte onboard harddisk helps me not to care about storage space.
